Abstract

In order to find the interrelationships between water quality parameters and zooplankters and enumerate species diversity, richness, abundance, a study was conducted at Bidi minor irrigation tank (MIT) located in hilly zone of Khanapur taluk of District Belagavi. In 18 months observation, a total of 63 species of zooplankters belonging to five classes and 24 families were recorded. Of these, family Brachionidae (Rotifera) represented with maximum of 16 species, followed by family Chydoridae (Cladocera) with nine species. Species richness was highest in rotifers with31 species whereas Cladocera group reported highest abundance of 10,862 individuals. Ostracoda group represented with 2 species and130 individuals. Based on the higher values of electric conductivity and abundance of Brachionus and other trophic indicator species, the status of Bidi minor irrigation tank can be classified as eutrophic. Sustainable management practices like regular desilting, reduction in use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides are essential to protect the water body from further degradation.
